How to Plan a Long Distance Move
Moving far away doesn’t have to be stressful!
Moving house is a big decision and it takes careful planning and organisation to ensure everything flows as seamlessly as possible. If you are moving a long way away from your current home, then it is even more important to plan well ahead of your move to ensure you avoid any common and costly pitfalls which could become stressful and costly mistakes.
At Lix Removals, we have an expert team who are hugely experienced in all kinds of removals and have helped families move long distances all over the country, as well as internationally too.
Here we will share our tips and advice on how to make your long distance move as smooth and harmonious as possible.
If you are moving overseas or to another part of the country you need to pay particular attention to how you pack your belongings.
There is less need for this if you are only moving down to road or a new area close by. When moving far away, however, your belongings are likely to be handled by different types of people and on various modes of transport too. Therefore when you are packing fragile items, it is crucial that they are sufficiently protected.
Pack boxes to the full where you can to keep things from moving around and make sure your removals company is aware if you have precious or valuable items so they know to take extra care.
You should also think about what you will need as soon as you arrive in your new home. Pack a ‘day one’ box full of essential items so you can get set up straight away without having to rummage around all of your belongings.
Avoid packing food or liquids which could spoil or leak in transit and mark boxes with your name as many overseas moving companies will be taking more than one household’s belongings over at a time so this helps to ensure all your boxes will stay together.

While any good moving company will have careful procedures in place to ensure your belongings don’t get damaged, it is important to ensure you have appropriate insurance for your items if they do.
Again this is of particular importance for long distance moves as the longer your items spend in transit, the higher the risk of damage.
It is a good idea to ask your removals company about their own insurance so you can find out what is covered and what you need to organise for extra peace of mind.
Check Your Garden Furniture
If you are moving internationally, it is important to be aware of exactly what items you can and cannot take into that country. Unsurprisingly insects and larvae aren’t some of them! Often these little pests can live inside garden furniture so it is important to check yours before you leave, as some regulations exist that prevent contaminated furniture from crossing the borders.
Moving an entire household great distances isn’t going to happen at lightning speed. If your belongings need to be moved onto different modes of transport (such as being put into a shipping container) or transported from one van to another to continue their journey, this takes time.
Ferry crossings, plane departures and train schedules can all affect when your belongings will arrive at your new home and can, of course, be subject to delays. Make sure your removals company provides you with a delivery window – but be aware that this can sometimes be up to 20 business days. Make sure that you have everything you need to live in your new home, and keep you comfortable (and sane) while you wait for your belongings to arrive.
By making yourself aware of the above, you can alleviate some of the stress and worry when it comes to making a long distance move.
